Лицензионная копия «King’s Bounty. Легенда о рыцаре», которую все так хвалят, подмигнула словами «лицензионная копия» и установилась. За галочку «не сувать ничего в „Мои документы“» — отдельное спасибо.

А потом пришёл Starforce и всё испортил.

Я не выношу DRM. Не только то, которое встраивается в mp3. Мне тошно от всего этого понятия, «управление цифровыми правами» (Digital Rights Management, если лень гуглить) в том виде, в котором оно сегодня реализуется.
Есть пылесос. Я пришёл в магазин и купил его. Пылесос стал мой. Могу из окна выкинуть, могу выпилить в стенках цветочки, могу собрать и разобрать, могу подарить.
А Старфорс говорит: не вздумайте выпиливать, взбесится и убежит. Не вздумайте курить рядом с ним, он этого не любит. И не дёргайте ногой, когда пылесосите.

DVD — не пылесос, кто спорит. Но почему нельзя ставить Deamon Tools вместе со Cтарфорсом? Почему нельзя спокойно установить Висту на другой компьютер, без того чтобы беспокоиться, не запомнил ли кто-нибудь модель материнской платы? Потому что не всё коту Масленица. Почему mp3 можно слушать не всяким плеером? Чтобы карась не дремал.

Карась не дремлет, честное пионерское, у него божеский рейтинг 1.4 на torrents.ru. Есть жизнь без DRM. Но недоумение остаётся. Почему нельзя выпиливать по пылесосу? Почему платить хуже, чем не платить? За деньги получаем кошмарный Cтарфорс, который не нужен никому, кроме издателей, который потом нужно удалять отдельно. Без денег получаем отсутствие мусора в системе и рабочую программу. Не задавая глупых вопросов.
А, за деньги ещё в довесок пресловутое «чувство удовлетворения от высокоморальности собственных действий». Это ведь так высокоморально — заплатить за диск. Наверное, у покупателей DVD уже есть свой святой покровитель.

Я искренне надеюсь, что это переходный период. Флуктуация идиотизма. Этот синдром RIAA пройдёт бесследно и останется курьёзом, который выдумают школьники на башорге через двадцать лет.

Not a bug

There is an e-mail client called Mozilla Thunderbird. Есть почтовый клиент Mozilla Thunderbird. It’s of high quality, it supports a load of protocols and therewith it’s freeware.
There is an e-mail client called Microsoft Outlook. The main advantage of Outlook is Exchange Server, it makes corporate correspondence and collaborative planning of any kind like paradise on earth.

Me, the most ingenuous user there is, have noticed only one difference between these respectable pieces of software.

In Thunderbird, I has a filter which sorts letters from JIRA (a bug-tracker): all the letters with words “[JIRA]” and “(CRR” in the subject were put in one folder, all the letters with words “[JIRA]” and “(LIV” — in another folder.
I tried to do something like this in Outlook, and amazingly discovered that it just can’t do this! Turns out, rules in Outlook can be created only with logical OR: so blindly copied rules are “[JIRA]” or “(CRR-” and “[JIRA]” or “(LIV-”. My sorting is broken — all the letters from JIRA contains “[JIRA]”.

Of course, my first reaction was “awful”, “how is it even supposed to work” and so on. But it made me think: if letters are alike at some point, say, one word in the subject, they are worth gathering in the same folder. Letters from JIRA in “JIRA” folder. And inside this folder could be subfolders, one for each JIRA-project. And there could be a rule for each subfolder, filtering letters by “(LIV-”, “(CRR-” or whatever.

This solution is way more clever and no rules require and keyword.

The conclusion is obvious. But when I was using flexible Thunderbird, there was no reason to think about this at all. Outlook motivated me to reorganize with the bug that turned out to be something else.

Demerits are continuation of merits. We all heard, read and repeated aphorisms, but an opportunity to get under varnished surface of a paradox and to see how it really works, it’s worth so much :)

Enemies and authorities

What is the use of authorities? They’re all good for their owners. But for us, creators and consumers of these authorities? They have magical ability of vanity freezing. Not worldly vanity, of course, but at least somebody’s and at least for some time.

Instead of all “N things that will bring everyone to your site and subscribe them to your RSS” I read one Jacob Nielsen’s alertbox and clicked some links out of it.

Pros and cons

Alas and alack.

Jacob Nielsen is a genius and one of a kind. He forgot more about design, than I will ever know. But I am just dazzled by his Alertbox. I have to copy the page to my little fluffy editor, where I can handle font and colors.
Nielsen requires sacrifice. But he is worth it.
